So I was going through some cricket history the other day and came across this name, Yograj Singh. If you follow Indian cricket even a little bit you have probably heard this name. Most of the time it comes up when someone is talking about Yuvraj Singh. But I got curious. Who actually is this man and what did he do in cricket?

I did some research and honestly the story is short but it is one of those stories that stays with you.

Who is Yograj Singh

Yograj Singh was born on March 25, 1958, in Punjab, India. He was a right arm fast medium bowler and also batted in the lower order. For anyone who knows Indian cricket history, you already know that fast bowling and India in that era were not exactly best friends. India was a spin country. So a fast bowler coming through the system already had the odds against him.

But Yograj was good enough to play domestic cricket for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, which is basically India’s top domestic competition. He had pace, he could move the ball, and in the late 70s and early 80s people did notice him as someone who could give India something different.

The International Career That Never Really Happened

Okay so here is the part that genuinely surprised me when I first read it. Yograj Singh played just one Test match and one ODI for India. Both came in 1981 against New Zealand. That is it. Two games and then he was gone from the squad.

I kept thinking about it. This guy worked hard enough to represent his country and then just two games? No proper run, no real chance to prove himself over a series or a season. Just two games and then the door closed.

Now why did this happen? There is no one clean answer but from what I found a few things were going on at that time. India was always going to favour spinners. The system was built around spin. Fast bowlers had to be exceptional to even hold a spot and Kapil Dev was the one guy who managed that. Everyone else struggled to stay consistent in the squad.

Life After Cricket: From the Pitch to the Screen

So after his playing days were done Yograj did something a lot of people do not expect. He went into acting. And he actually built a real career out of it.

He started with Punjabi cinema and his first major work as a director came with the film Vichhora in 1994. After that he kept going and appeared in movies like Jatt Punjab Daa and Yaar Maar where he built a reputation as someone who could play intense and powerful characters really well. That commanding personality he probably developed on the cricket field translated well to the screen.

The bigger Bollywood moment came with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag where a much wider audience got to see him. That film gave him recognition beyond just Punjab and regional cinema. He also appeared in Singh is Bling and Teen Thay Bhai in Bollywood.

So yes the man had two careers basically. Not everyone manages that.

The Father and Son Story

This is honestly the part of his life that most people know him for now. Yuvraj Singh, his son, went on to become one of India’s greatest cricketers. Six sixes in an over at the 2007 T20 World Cup. A World Cup winner in 2011. A cancer survivor who came back and still played international cricket. Yuvraj did everything.

And Yograj pushed him hard to get there. In several interviews Yograj has admitted to being extremely strict with Yuvraj from a very young age. He basically wanted his son to achieve what he himself could not. Yuvraj has spoken about that pressure too. It was intense. But he has also said that the discipline his father forced into him is part of what made him who he became.

That relationship is genuinely one of the most interesting father and son stories in Indian sports history. A father who got two games for India and a son who played over 300 internationals. That contrast alone says a lot.

Quick Note If You Are New to This

If you are just getting into Indian cricket history it is very easy to mix up the two names. Yograj is the father. Brief career. One Test, one ODI in 1981. Yuvraj is the son. Long career. World Cup winner. One of the best ever.

What Is He Doing Now

Yograj is still very much in public life. He gives interviews, he talks about cricket, he talks about selectors, he talks about Yuvraj and MS Dhoni and a lot of things in between. He is known for being extremely outspoken and not holding back his opinions. In 2025 he made headlines again when he said some very heavy things in a podcast about his playing days.

He is in his mid 60s now but the fire is still there. That much is obvious.

My Take

What I find interesting about Yograj Singh is that most people only know him as Yuvraj’s dad. And that is a bit unfair to be honest. Yes the international career was short. Yes the son went on to be far more successful. But this was a man who played first class cricket for years, represented India even for two games which millions of people never get to do, built a second career in films, and raised one of India’s greatest ever cricketers.

The story is not long but it is not small either.
