The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly begun internal discussions about Shreyas Iyer as a strong candidate for future white-ball captaincy, especially as India looks to build a leadership core beyond the 2027 ICC World Cup. With Rohit Sharma expected to continue until that tournament, the board is exploring long-term options for the T20 and ODI formats.
Leadership Qualities in Focus
Iyer has consistently demonstrated tactical maturity and calm decision-making under pressure, both in domestic cricket and the IPL. He captained Delhi Capitals to the IPL 2020 final and currently leads Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), where he has earned praise for his strategic acumen and ability to manage high-profile players.
According to a senior BCCI official, “Shreyas brings a strong mix of aggression and composure. He communicates well, thinks clearly under pressure, and has the respect of his teammates — qualities every captain needs.”
Smooth Succession Planning After 2027
While Rohit Sharma remains India’s primary leader in ODIs and T20Is, selectors and the BCCI want to ensure a smooth leadership transition over the next two years. With Hardik Pandya’s fitness and long-term availability under question, Iyer’s name has reportedly gained traction in recent high-level meetings.
Insiders suggest that India could hand Iyer more leadership responsibilities in the bilateral series and upcoming tours to test his readiness at the international level.
Form and Fitness to Be Key Factors
Iyer’s selection will, however, depend on his consistency with the bat and sustained fitness. He missed parts of the 2024 season due to a back injury but returned strongly in both IPL and domestic competitions. If he maintains that form, the road to a leadership role could open up swiftly.
Team management also values Iyer’s flexibility across formats and his ability to anchor innings or accelerate when required — a rare trait in middle-order batters.
Support Within the Squad
Several current and former players, including Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane, have spoken highly of Iyer’s leadership temperament. His ability to handle pressure in high-stakes games, particularly in the IPL, has added weight to his candidacy.
If confirmed, Iyer could step into a deputy role as early as the next limited-overs tour, laying the groundwork for India’s post-2027 leadership structure.
